SIG-HFIS

SIG-HFIS is now accepting applications for the 2020 Student Travel Award from ASIS&T SIG-HFIS. The winner will receive a check for $500 to defray travel expenses to the Annual Meeting this year in Pittsburgh. Details below. Please share with the students you know and work with!

The purpose of the award is to assist a student in a Master's or doctoral program in attending the ASIS&T Annual Meeting by defraying travel expenses. The award shall consist of a check for $500 given to a single applicant. The SIG-HFIS Student Travel Award is sponsored by SIG HFIS. It is administered by a SIG-HFIS Award Jury, which is comprised of the officers of SIG-HFIS.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • be an ASIS&T member at the time of application, with preference given to those who are SIG-HFIS members. (If you are not a member, you can join now through your ASIS&T member profile see the SIG HFIS web-page for details.)
  • be currently enrolled in a graduate (doctoral or Master's) program as of the time of the Annual Meeting
  • have not previously won the SIG-HFIS graduate student travel award.

TO APPLY

Applicants for the 2020 Travel Award should submit the following items, by email, to the SIG HFIS Award Jury at sighfis@gmail.com by the deadline of July 31, 2020.

Applications should include:

  • a cover letter including name, address, phone number, email address, academic affiliation. The cover letter should identify the attached statements as being submitted specifically for this award.
  • a curriculum vitae.
  • a 300-word statement on why Annual Meeting attendance will benefit the student in their pursuit of a future career, including the role of their conference submission in that regard, and its relation to the history and/or foundations of information science. Statements may also discuss financial need.

SELECTION

  • Each application package will be appraised in terms of originality, clarity of expression, financial need, and the connection between attending the Annual Meeting and the student's career aspirations. Applicants who have had a contribution of any kind accepted for the conference with relevance to the activities of HFIS, broadly construed, will be given priority consideration.

SIG-III

2020 InfoShare Call for Nominations

The ASIS&T’s Special Interest Group on International Information Issues (SIG-III) is sponsoring another group of deserving information professionals from developing countries for complimentary ASIS&T memberships (the financial burden of which would otherwise be prohibitive) for the year 2020. We are soliciting nominations of candidates for the InfoShare Membership Award. The award will be given to LIS professionals.

Please include a one-page curriculum vitae and a one-page description of why this person is deserving of membership, including their willingness to promote ASIS&T within their networks and build relationships between ASIS&T and the national/regional organizations. Awardees will be decided by a vote of the SIG-III officers. All curriculum vitae will be kept private, accessible only to SIG-III officers.

Each membership award will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year if the new member proves to be a strong advocate for ASIS&T in their home country during the year. Awardees will be asked to submit a report on their activities by next year's Annual Meeting, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • sharing ASIS&T publications that they receive (the Bulletin of ASIS&T and JASIS&T) with other colleagues
  • promoting the SIG-III paper contest among their colleagues
  • serving as a contact/coordinator for ASIS&T members traveling to their area who may be able to speak about ASIS&T and information science
  • having the ability to strengthen the relationships between ASIS&T and the national/regional organizations, and
  • sponsoring lectures on information science topics in their area on behalf of ASIS&T

Nominators can mentor the award recipients for the above activities.

We look forward to welcoming new members to ASIS&T from across the globe, especially from countries that have never been ASIS&T members or have limited ASIS&T membership. Women, minority, and candidates from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

SIG-STI

ASIS&T SIG-STI (Special Interest Group on Scientific & Technical Information) is planning to propose panels at the ASIS&T Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh this fall. We'd really like to provide a venue in which presenters and audiences could have thorough discussions on topics related to scientific and technical information.

The proposed theme for the panel: Sustainable information studies
The theme of this panel covers a broad scope of related topics, e.g., miscommunication of information/misinformation, climate change, sustainable AI [adoption] or sustainable AI for social good, etc.

We are still looking for 1-2 panelists to join the panel.
